I left my oak tree like a fool,

My friend the oak, my alter ego.

We were of the same wood, a little rustic, a little rough,

Of which anything can be made except, of course, flutes.

I now have ash trees and Judas trees,

All good seed, high foliage,

But I miss you so much, my old country branch,

My only Christmas tree, my mast of Cocagne!

I lived happily by my tree, I should never have left my eyes off it.

I'm an idiot, I'll have no more joy.

I threw away my pipe, my old wooden pipe

That had smoked, without resentment,

Without ever burning my lips,

The tobacco of hard times in its good old pipe-head.

I've got meerschaum pipes adorned with fleurons,

The kind you smoke, raising your brow,

But I'll never find again, in my heart or on my lips

The taste of my old wooden pipe, holy smokes!

I left my good wife

Because after so many years,

I was fed up with seeing the same face.

Now I'm searching the countryside to find

A new companion, as good as she was

Even if she sometimes left

Too many stones in the lentils,

But she’d put her arms around my neck

Whenever my business went downhill!

I had a garret for lodgings

With cracks that let you see the sky.

I knew this place so well,

And with a kiss on the way

I would take my night beauties

For a ride on the Big Bear.

I don't live in a garret anymore,

It can now rain cats and dogs, I don't care,

But many guys will climb to Heaven

Before I do, I'm sure!

I haven't seen the Moon for 107 years!

I should never have left my tree!
