Silencieux et immobile, le cadran solaire indique le temps solaire par le déplacement de l'ombre d'une tige appelé "style", il montre l'heure par la longueur (ou la direction ) de son ombre. Il doit êtré incliné parallèlement à l'axe de rotation de la Terre. Cette inclinaison, dont l'angle dépend de la latitude du lieu, permet de lire l'heure pendant toute l'année directement sur un même ensemble de graduations, les lignes horaires, en ajustant à l'heure civile avec le tableau d'équation du temps (sur la gauche du monument) et en ajoutant (ou enlevant) une heure pendant l'été (ou l'hiver).
