A Little Bit of History (1 x PiP)

A Little Bit of History (1 x PiP)
This small fragment of an ironnware pot (5 x 4 x 2.5 cm) was found by myself beside a ploughed field a few minutes walk from my home. It is the remains of a 1lb (453g) pot made to contain marmalade manufactured by the world famous Keiller & Sons of Dundee, Scotland.

The pot was manufactured by the Maling Pottery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England. Keiller & Sons of Dundee was one of their first and largest customers, records show them ordering as many as 1,500,000 in a single year.

If my information from the web is correct the the letter 'A' above and to the right of the letter 'L' in the word MEDAL indicates that the pot was made in 1873. On the base of the pot are the impressed letters WCAST, indicating NEWCASTLE.

Example of a similar pot manufactured in 1873, as indicated by the letter A.

Thanks so much Rosa, appreciate your kind comment. I was only up on the side of the field trying to maintain the mandatory 2 mtr separation from people coming towards me down a narrow
track. Lucky day!

All the best, enjoy the rest of the day, Doug
