Over the Bridge to Skye

The Skye Bridge (Scottish Gaelic: Drochaid an Eilein Sgitheanaich) is a road bridge over Loch Alsh, Scotland, connecting the Isle of Skye to the island of Eilean Bàn. The name is also used for the whole Skye Crossing, which further connects Eilean Bàn to the mainland across the Carrich Viaduct. The crossing forms part of the A87. Traditionally, the usual route from the mainland to Skye was the shortest crossing, with a length of around 500 metres (1,640 ft), across the sound between the villages of Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland and Kyleakin on the island's east coast. A ferry service operated from around 1600, run by private operators and latterly by Caledonian MacBrayne. On completion of the bridge in 1995 the ferry service was discontinued.

The Quiraing (in Gaelic: A' Chuith-Raing) is a landslip on the eastern face of Meall na Suiramach, the northernmost summit of the Trotternish on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. The whole of the Trotternish Ridge escarpment was formed by a great series of landslips; the Quiraing is the only part of the slip still moving, the road at its base, near Flodigarry, requires repairs each year.

The name Quiraing comes from Old Norse 'Kví Rand', which means "Round Fold".

A great video. I felt a bit sad when the bridge opened and Skye wasn't an island any more but it is beautiful and has made a big difference to the islanders. And there is still the ferry from Glenelg to Skye from April to October, the last turntable ferry in Scotland and with its own resident sea eagles.

Thanks very much Jean. Certainly the bridge seems to have been a good thing for the economy of the island and surrounding area, especially since the removal of the toll.

We have made that journey so very many times Doug and I still get a buzz of excitement when we cross the bridge.to this magical island. I remember we parked and walked up over the bridge to take photos - but I was too short and couldn't see over the top!! A delightful video and photo. I only hope we can return there some time. Many thanks also for your kind message

Thanks so much for your visit and kind comment Carol. I have to agree, after driving through many miles of beautiful highland scenery, crossing the bridge produces an extra sense of excitement every time.

Thanks for posting this film. It's an impressive bridge and they were still collecting a toll when I last went over. There was something very relaxing about queing for the ferry in the old days and just watching them go back and forward waiting your turn.

Thanks so much for your visit Colin. Set out for the Skye ferry from Lossiemouth once back in the eighties but only managed to get as far as Invergarry before my old Vauxhall decided to play up. hence I never used the ferry.

Many thanks for your visit Frans, I'm happy that you like the video/music. In the Highlands of Scotland and the Western Isles, including Skye, they paint white arrows on the road to remind European (and other overseas visitors) which side of the road we drive on. I'm sure they help but there have been a number of accidents over the years.

Thank you for making me one of your contacts Frans.

Good health for you also, Doug
