Snow berries

The red fruits of the European spindle (Euonymus europaeus) are particularly attractive after snowfall.A special feature of this poisonous shrub:There are staminate flowers with rudimentary pistils, and pistillate flowers with rudimentary stamens, and hermaphrodite flowers which are male as a rule in function, and rarely produce seeds. Euonymus europaeus is often found on the edge of forests and is also often planted in gardens. However, whole shrubs are often infested by caterpillars of the spindle ermine (Yponomeuta cagnagella), which eat the leaves and more or less damage the plant.
