Einsamkeit in Island - Icelandic loneliness

Skálholt war seit dem Mittelalter der wichtigste Bischofssitz Islands. 1550 wurden hier der letzte katholische Bischof Islands, Jón Arason, und seine Söhne, von Anhängern der Reformation hingerichtet.

View to the cathedral of Skálholt. Behind it the mighty 1491 m high Hekla, one of the most active volcanoes of Iceland, whose last eruption was only nine years ago. Skálholt was the most important bishop's see of Iceland since the Middle Ages. In 1550 the last Catholic bishop of Iceland, Jón Arason, and his sons were executed here by supporters of the Reformation.
