Vor den Toren des romantischen Städtchens Karlstadt am Main liegt das große Zementwerk der Schwenk AG. Der Rohstoff Kalk für die Zementproduktion wird in direkter Nachbarschaft in einem riesigen Steinbruch abgebaut.
Die Zementherstellung war früher mit enormen Staubemissionen verbunden, so dass die Dächer Karlstadts deutlich mit grauem Staub überzogen waren. Seit Jahren sind aber moderne Filteranlagen im Einsatz, so dass das Städtchen wieder sauber ist. Die Schornstein-Abgase bestehen praktisch nur noch aus Wasserdampf und Spuren von Sickstoffverbindungen und Schwermetallen.

At the gates of the romantic town of Karlstadt am Main is a big cement plant. The raw material limestone for the cement production is mined in the neighborhood in a huge quarry.
The cement production was formerly associated with enormous dust emissions, so that the roofs of Karlstadt were visibly covered with gray dust. For years, however, modern filter systems are in use, so that the town is clean again. Through the chimney only water vapor and traces of nitrogen compounds and heavy metals are emitted.
