Wie damals üblich soll die Kapelle so zur Besinnung auf die Vergänglichkeit des menschlichen Lebens anregen.
Wände und Säulen sind mit Tausenden von Knochen und Schädeln aus den zum Kloster gehörenden Gräbern bedeckt.
Die Capela dos Ossos ist Teil des Museums von Évora ('Zentrum für sakrale Kunst der Kirche Mercês') und eine der 'wichtigen' Touristenattraktionen der Stadt.
