Piemont Tour 2019 Hospiz Grosser Sankt Bernhard

Entrance to the hospice on the Great St. Bernhard
The hospice on the Great Saint Bernard is named after Bernard of Aosta, who is said to have founded the hospice around 1050 together with Queen Ermengarde, wife of Rudolf III of Burgundy, to protect travellers at this important Alpine crossing against the Saracens and against bandits.
This is also the home of the St. Bernard dog breed, which was bred as rescue dogs for the search for avalanche victims and became famous worldwide, especially through Barry, who is said to have saved the lives of over 40 people.

It's also an interesting insight into the origins of the St Bernard breed.
