The Great St. Bernard is the pass that connects the Rhone Valley in Valais, at an altitude of 2469 metres above sea level, with the Aosta Valley and the Piedmont region.
Despite its high altitude, the pass has been used since the early Iron Age, as evidenced by finds along the road. In the times of the Roman Empire it was one of the most important Alpine crossings, as a direct link from northern Italy to Gaul and the Rhine. Emperor Claudius developed the mule track into a road.
