The district of Lacanau-Océan on the Atlantic coast, built at the beginning of the 20th century, with its beaches, is considered particularly suitable for surfers. Three kilometres inland, separated from the Atlantic by the dune and the forest, lies the Lac de Lacanau, one of the largest lakes in France.
The dunes around Lacanau are up to 66 metres high.
Every year in August, Lacanau-Ocèan attracts the best surfers in the world who compete in the Lacanau Pro Competition, a stage of the World Professional Surfing Championships.
