Die Nagelfluh der Nordalpen und des Alpenvorlands ist ein geologisch junges Konglomerat aus dem Erosionsmaterial der Alpen.
Die oberen Schichten aus eiszeitlichem Schotter werden Deckenschotter genannt. Im Alpenvorland ist der Deckenschotter oft an Schluchthängen aufgeschlossen.
Die im südbayerischen Deckenschotter vielerorts leicht verfügbare Nagelfluh war früher neben Kalktuff einer der wichtigsten Natursteine. Sie wurde gerne bei repräsentativen Bauwerken eingesetzt. So ist sie beispielsweise im Fundament der Münchner Frauenkirche, in der Portalanlage der Münchner Universität und der Burg zu Burghausen verbaut. Auch bei Privathäusern fand die dekorative Nagelfluh häufig Verwendung, besonders für Tür- und Fensterstöcke.

Der Brannenburger Nagelfluh ist wertvoller denn je.
Der größte Teil des Vorkommens wurde wegen seiner Einzigartigkeit als Naturdenkmal ausgewiesen.
"Die früheste, noch geschichtlich nachweisbare Kunde von der Biber war die,
daß etwa 905 der Bischof von Brixen, der in Degerndorf Besitz hatte, auch das Recht zum Mühlsteinbrechen hatte".

Als im Monat März des Jahres 1460 Herzog Albrecht III von Bayern verstarb, wurde er in einem Sarkophag aus Degerndorfer (jetzt Brannenburger) Nagelfluh zu seiner letzten Ruhestätte auf dem heiligen Berg Andechs gebracht.
"Der Wagner mußte nur noch den großen Kastenschlitten richten und die Deichsel verstärken, denn der Sarkophag, den die Degerndorfer Steinbrecher aus der Nagelfluh auf der Biber gehauen hatten, war sehr schwer,........"
