Greece, Kerkyra (Corfu), Monument to Elisabeth of Austria at the Achilleion Palace

Greece, Kerkyra (Corfu), Monument to Elisabeth of Austria at the Achilleion Palace
Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie (24 December 1837 – 10 September 1898) was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary from her marriage to Franz Joseph I of Austria on 24 April 1854 until her assassination in 1898.

The Achilleion Palace on the island of Kerkyra (Corfu) was built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria at the suggestion of the Austrian consul Alexander Watzberg. The palace was completed in 1890, a year after the death of Elisabeth's son and heir to the Austrian throne, Rudolf. The building's design was inspired by Achilles, the hero of the Iliad.
