im Zentrum des alten Ballenstedt
ist der Alte Markt. Links im Bild das alte Rathaus von 1683. Es beherbergt heute ein Restaurant. Stephan Moller war damals der Zimmermann und Erker und Dachfenster wurden im Zuge der Sanierung im Jahre 1991/92 wieder Instand gesetzt. Im PIP das Anhaltinische Wappen von 1661. Es war ursprünglich im Obertor der alten Stadtmauer.
In der Nähe der städtischen Litfaßsäule befand sich bis 1820 der Pranger.. Der Marktturm im Bilde ist wahrscheinlich ein Teil der Stadtmauer Ballenstedts die 1543 errichtet wurde. Auch einzelne Räume im begehbaren Turm wurden bis zum Jahre 1820 als Gefängnis genutzt. Den Schlüssel gibt es im Resturant Athen oder in der nahen Pension.

Beautiful scene, and a terrific shot, Ulrich! I think that the conifer in the center really adds to the composition. Do they light that tree for Christmas?

Today the place Ballenstedt shown here has about 5000 inhabitants. Quite early was at this point the center of the town; this middle has shifted some 100 m farther after the construction of the castle to the west, and here on the former marketplace it is today quiet. You asked for the fir in the picture. This fir stands on the surround yard of the Protestant church witch was an old cemetery many years no more used. I am sure quite that this tree not as a Christmas tree is decorated.
Christmas trees are neither in Catholic nor as here seen the Protestant Church an important subject. The building authorities of the city administration mostly look after putting up of fir-trees and also after the decoration with lights in the streets; but also before big companies decorated Christmas trees are put up from time to time.
In the place the medieval town wall is received to a good part (not on the photo, however, nearby), even if it is rather unspectacular.
