Studied St Petersburg Conservatory and then joined a travelling opera troupe and toured Russia. In 1898 he joined the Mariinsky making his debut as Tzertza in “Rogneda” by Serov.He remained a principal at the Mariinsky for the rest of his career.He was appointed Professor of singing at the Leningrad Conservatory after the revolution Roles include the Miller ‘Rusalka” Dvorak, Gudal ‘The Demon” Rachmaninoff , Dosifey “Khovanschina” Mossorgsky and Sobinin ‘Ivan Susanin” Glinka,
