Der Vinschgau ['fɪnʃɡau̯] auch Vintschgau, italienisch Val Venosta, stellt den obersten Teil des Etschtals in Südtirol (Italien) dar. Geographisch werden seine Grenzen am Reschenpass und an der Töll bei Partschins veranschlagt. Der Vinschgau wird meist in Ober- und Untervinschgau eingeteilt. Der Obervinschgau läuft somit vom Reschen bis einschließlich Laas. Der Untervinschgau geht von Schlanders bis zur Töll. Die Bezirksgemeinschaft Vinschgau umfasst auch die Seitentäler, nicht jedoch die Gemeinden im unteren Vinschgau kurz vor Meran.

Die ersten Apfelbäume haben sich in Kasachstan im mittleren Asien entwickelt. Über die Seidenstraße gelangten die Äpfel zu den Griechen. Mit den Eroberungszügen der Römer kam der Apfel schließlich auch nach Südtirol. Dort bauten im Mittelalter vor allem Klöster Äpfel an und bewahrten so das Wissen über die Anbaumethoden und die verschiedenen Sorten.
