Stuttgart's zoological-botanical garden has its own mineral springs.
Grey herons take advantage of this when it's not feeding time for sealions, pelicans or penguins where they hope to catch some fish, they always seem to know the time;-)
Herons have by now established about 40 nests in Wilhelma's lime avenue!

Its always good to see these grey herons Gudrun. Three excellent examples here rich in sharpness and quality. As you know, only days after posting my own heron I have some more to post from Scotland too.

Cheers. Herb

Many thanks, Herb! Considering that grey herons used to be a threatened species in Germany they have made a remarkable recovery. The ones frrequenting the Wilhelma are very cheeky;-)

Thanks a lot, Adele! In the last few years the herons discovered that the large Victoria water lily leaves are strong enough to carry them;-)

Three outstanding shots of this beautiful and elegant bird Gudrun.

Each one super-sharp and detailed where it needs to be and captured in lovely sunshine. I also like the huge water lillys and the light and colours on the water.

First class work..!!⭐️

Thank you so much, Keith! That pond will get even better in the course of summer, the tropical water lilies were onyl planted in mid May. The herons are virtually everywhere now and as unpopular with fishermen as cormorants;-)

Easy to see why the fishermen don't like them........they are voracious predators and will eat anything from fish and frogs, to rats and mice!

Gudrun club has replied to Keith Burton club
They can eat all the rats and mice they like;-)

Great use of selective DoF, Gudrun!

Birds are intelligent creatures, despite many people still judging them differently. ;)

Have a great day!
