St. Georgen, Wismar

One of three monumental brick gothic churches in Wismar, St. Georgen was first mentioned in the mid 13th century. In its current form it mainly dates from 1404-1594, the spire was never finished.
In April 1945 St.Georgen was badly damaged by bombs and deteriorated further over the years. After the northern transsept collapsed in 1990, the church underwent extensive stabilization, repair and reconstruction which was finished in 2010. Since then it is also in use as a concert venue.

Und ich dachte schon, das ist ein café...also messwein während des konzerts? ;-) In KA gab's sowas mal sowas ähnliches, ein restaurant zwischen halbverfallenen kirchenmauern. Keine ahnung, ob es noch existiert.

Ich glaube, das Café wird nur zu Veranstaltungen geöffnet... In Norwegen und vor allem auf den britischen Inseln habe ich das mit den Cafés aber oft erlebt- da haben sie den tearoom in Refektorium, Kapitelhaus oder Sakristei, mit selbstgebackenen Kuchen- und gleich daneben ist der Andenkenladen;-)

Auf den britischen inseln ist man pragmatisch. Kaffee/tee, kuchen und andenken sind wahrscheinlich lukrativer als gebete ;-)

Die haben ja auch keine Kirchensteuer, da muss das Geld so reinkommen;-) Die Eintrittspreise in die Kathedralen sind entsprechend hoch... Zahle ich ja gerne, aber wenn ich für's Fotografieren nochmal zahlen soll, fühle ich mich abgezockt, denn die mit den Handys müssen nicht extra zahlen.

A beautiful series Gudrun.............the choice of brickwork for a church interior on this scale seems pretty unusual to me..........but it works very well, especially the colours. The light in all three images is gorgeous and as always your exposure is spot on. I especially like view of the ceiling in the second PiP, which is stunning!

Thanks very much, Keith! Brick is prevalent all over the Baltic coast. There are quite a few very large gothic churches built of it, it's a very distinctive style and often the brickwork is intricate using differently glazed bricks.
