Þeistareykir

Þeistareykir
The volcanic system of Þeistareykir has a large and colourful high temperature geothermal field situated at the foot of table mountain Bæjarfjall. Geothermic drilling since 2007 has created the overflow lake in the photo. Iceland's national power company Landsvirkjun has started operating their new geothermal power plant (see note) which provides energy for the new silica plant near Husavík. grapevine.is/news/2018/04/18/new-silica-factory-opens-for-business-in-husavik-north-iceland

www.landsvirkjun.com/company/powerprojectsandtenders/theistareykir

It is good to see the people in the main picture Gudrun, to evaluate the scale of this wonderful scene. The sheep look perfectly at home :) Thank you for the information and the excellent PiP.

Many thanks, Rosa! The landscape is vast and nearly empty, I could have spent longer exploring it all !

Such an amazing landscape...............and in the grand scheme of things relatively unspoiled. It seems such a shame to build anything there at all. However, people need energy and a Geothermal Power Plant seems to be the most logical way of providing it. I'm not so sure about the silica plant though............that's an environmental disaster waiting to happen!

This is a really wonderful image Gudrun...........accompanied by a love shot in the PiP and a really well researched and fascinating narrative and links. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much, Keith! There are several geothermal power stations in Iceland, this is only the latest. It's certainly one of the cleanest ways to produce energy. Our Icelandic guide had a few things to say about the silica plant though, especially the fact it's sitting in a rift and earthquake zone...

Hope they will not spoil what they have as it has been done in our countries...

Thanks a lot, Isabel! The Left Greens in Húsavík were pro the silica plant because it was considered better than an aluminium smelter...Like everywhere it's jobs against environment.

Die Farben sind klasse.

Wahrscheinlich der billigste Standort für das Werk?
Gudrun club has replied to Dida From Augsburg

A most impressive landscape. I see the point of the geothermal energy, but beyond that as you noted above, as so often it's jobs against the environment.

Thanks a lot, George! Iceland uses lots of geothermal energy - they even grow tomatoes and fruit that way;-)
