Ickleton - St Mary Magdalene from SW

26 Dec 2022 1 50
The aisled Norman nave - evidenced in this view by the W door - was heightened in the C14 when the south aisle was also rebuilt to a wider design and the S porch was built; Victorian W window. The tower is early C14 but stands over a Norman crossing and the spire (restored in 1991-2) may be C13 in origin, as (according to The Buildings of England ) there are signs that the timbers were dismantled and reused when the tower was rebuilt. Built in 1844-5 and attributed to John Thomas (1813-1862) . Originally symmetrical, but extended to left and right in the 1870s and 1880s. The station became unstaffed in 1967 and the building, vacant since 2004, was under threat of demolition, but received Grade II listing in August 2020: historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1471392 ; www.savebritainsheritage.org/campaigns/item/665/PRESS-RELEASE-Dads-Army-station-saved-by-listing .

Lincoln - looking SSW from Lindum Terrace

Looking across the NW corner of the arboretum and the Victorian houses in Arboretum Avenue towards the lower ("downhill") part of the town. South Common is on the horizon on the left. Taken about 8.15 a.m.

Lincoln - looking E from High Bridge

21 Mar 2018 97
Taken from the top floor of Stokes High Bridge Café, where my viewpoint was dictated by the availability of a free table! The brick and stone building with corner turret on the far left dates from 1907 but the echoing turret to its right belongs to the Waterside Shopping Centre, an exercise in pastiche. Spanning the river is Empowerment , designed by Stephen Broadbent and completed in 2002. The building to the right dates from 1982-3, with a block of (I suppose) c.1960 on the far right.

Lincoln - Arboretum looking NW

Taken about 8.00 a.m. with the bandstand of 1884 to the left ( www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1388688 ), a late C19 cast-iron shelter to the right ( www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1388690 ), and the crossing tower of the cathedral in the background. The arboretum itself was designed and laid out by Edward Milner (1819-84) in 1870-2 and opened in 1872, following an act of 1870 which had enabled Lincoln Corporation to purchase Monks Ley Common, part of which was sold for housing to finance the creation of public gardens: www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1000985 .

The dovecote stands over the east end of a former cartshed, now converted to a house. Described by the Historic England listing as early C19 although the "black and white" treatment of the timber framing is perhaps a later alteration: historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1062558 .

Chancel rebuilt 1855 to designs of C.A. Buckler, who also designed the alabaster reredos (c.1863); according to the church guide book, James Raymond of Hildersham Hall provided the reredos in memory of his wife and seven children, who all predeceased him, dying of consumption; each of the angels in the spandrels at the top of the reredos represents one of the seven daughters. E window glass of c.1865 by Clayton and Bell. The rector, Robert Goodwin, had been a leading light in the Cambridge Camden Society during his time at the University. Clayton and Bell carried out the wall paintings c.1889-90, following a scheme designed (according to the church guidebook) by the rector, Robert Goodwin, along with his widowed sister Elizabeth, who helped to finance the work. Goodwin had been a leading light in the Cambridge Camden Society during his time at the University. In this panel, Saul is struck blind and called to repentance on the road to Damascus. It is at the western end of the N wall of the chancel - the guidebook points out that, as the paintings move eastwards, so the viewer is taken nearer to heaven, the E window being flanked by depictions of Christ's resurrection and ascension. On the right, St Martha, complementing St Mary Magdalene seen in the easterly window .

The easterly of two stained glass windows with C14 figures of saints, "much restored in 1853 by King of Norwich" according to the Buildings of England . On the left, St John the Evangelist, apparently holding the poisoned chalice given him by a pagan priest of Ephesus to test him; the poison escaped from the chalice in the form of a small two-headed dragon, as recounted in the Golden Legend (1228-1298): www.louvre.fr/en/oeuvre-notices/saint-john-evangelist . On the right, St Mary Magdalene, seen wiping Christ's feet with her hair in the lower panel (which looks to me as if it is entirely C19).

Hildersham - Holy Trinity from SE 2015-12-31

C13 W tower with lancet windows (one is visible below the bell openings); aisles were added in the late C13. However, the church was extensively restored and altered in the C19 - the S porch was added (or rebuilt), the tower heightened (1878), the S transept added (replacing a chapel demolished at the start of the C19) and the chancel rebuilt (1855) in style of c.1300, to the designs of C.A. Buckler. The work was carried out during the incumbency of the Robert Goodwin from 1847; according to the church guidebook, Goodwin had been a leading light in the Cambridge Camden Society during his time at the University and financed some of the work himself, along with his widowed sister, Elizabeth Hemington-Goodwin.
