Hildersham - Holy Trinity - detail of chancel wall painting 2016-01-28

Hildersham - Holy Trinity - detail of chancel wall painting 2016-01-28
Clayton and Bell carried out the wall paintings c.1889-90, following a scheme designed (according to the church guidebook) by the rector, Robert Goodwin, along with his widowed sister Elizabeth, who helped to finance the work. Goodwin had been a leading light in the Cambridge Camden Society during his time at the University.

In this panel, Saul is struck blind and called to repentance on the road to Damascus. It is at the western end of the N wall of the chancel - the guidebook points out that, as the paintings move eastwards, so the viewer is taken nearer to heaven, the E window being flanked by depictions of Christ's resurrection and ascension.
