But the direction I took kept going on a long bench of alpine tundra. Couldn't resist to keep going, even though I wasn't going to bag a peak.

The real South Peak is a wall of scree. Per the map and now looking at this, you bear straight up several hundred feet of scree (similar to my experience on my Boundary Peak hike). I'm just not able to do that anymore.

Eventually enough cairns led the way and I got up out of that bowl. I'm above that peak to the left, which I thought was South Peak, but is not. It is just a nameless arm of the mountain.

Still no sign of trail, and I almost turned back, but I was attracted to that saddle. Could probably at least dead recon up that before quitting.

Switchbacks go up behind Elephants Back and then over Carson Pass. A car drop would have been nice but wasn't in the cards, and the permitting at Carson Pass Trailhead is not as simple as the Mokelumne Wilderness south of it.
