Christmas puppet show The Snow Maiden
Bush Holley Historical Site, Old Greenwich, Connecticut
The Story as told by the No Strings Marionette Company (except it has a happy ending in that the snow maiden comes back every winter)
Once there was an old man who lived with his wife. They were very sad because they had no children.
One winter, when it was snowing, they made a beautiful statue of a girl with snow. Then they wished it would become a real girl. And lo! Their wish came true; the statue became a beautiful little girl. They were very happy as she played around the house all day. The winter passed by in happiness but as spring came the girl became sad and quiet. When summer came, she became sadder and quieter than before.
One day, the old man and woman asked their little girl to go to the forest with her friends as they thought that it would lift her spirits and make her happy once again. The group of girls went to the forest and picked flowers. Then they made a fire and danced around it. But as soon as the little girl went near the fire, she melted down and evaporated into thin air.
