Porto is with a population of about 250.000 the largest city in Northern Portugal. In "Greater Porto", the metropolitan area, live even more than 1.7 million people.
The historical center of Porto was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Port wine is named after Porto, since the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia on the southern banks of the river Douro are the centers for packaging, transport and export of the fortified wine. Some years ago I had been here for a couple of days before I started the "Camino Portugues" here.
The construction of the dominating Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto) began around 1100 and was completed more than 2 centuries later. Though it underwent different alterations over the centuries (gothic, baroque), the romanesque structure of the once fortified church is still clearly visible.
The gothic cloister was added end of the 14th century. Traditional, blue azulejos are applied to the walls. Not only the word "azulejo", but as well the technique is a Moorish legacy.

Having a coffee in one of the coffe-shops around the "Praça da Batalha" with a view onto to the "Igreja de Santo Ildefonso". The church was erected in baroque style between 1709 and 1739, when finally the towers were completed. Since 1932, the facade is covered with (around 11.000) azulejo tiles

"Reis & Filhos" was a jewelry as well, just like "Ancora", just seen. It was founded in 1880, but nowadays the building hosts an "urban.culture.store", what ever that is. The art nouveau facade (cast iron!) is from 1905.

The "Confeitaria do Bolhão" is a bakery and pastry shop, that was founded in 1896 and existed upto 1985. After the doors were locked for 10 years it was reopened and by now, here is as well a snack-bar and a restaurant. I had a nice breakfast here.

The current "Mercado do Bolhão" was errected in 1914, when this was a very modern structore with two floors. Since then it underwent numerous alterations and restaurations. After 2007 a wide civic protest and a petition with 50.000 signatures saved the market, as it was planned to demolish the market. Since 2015 restoration and modernisation is now under way.

The "Manteigaria do Bolhão", located in a corner of the ground floor, offers everything needed for the Portuguese cuisine, but the bacalhau (stockfish), but the fishmonger (previous upload) will probably have some..

The inner city of Porto hosts two stunning art deco buildings - facing each other. The "Garagem Passos Manuel" opened in 1939 with three parking levels and shops on the ground floor. The building, designed by architect Mario de Abreu, still serves as a car park.

After an older concert hall had been demolished, the erection of the "Coliseu do Porto" started in 1938. The new building opened in December 1941. In 1971 the old concert hall was transformed into a cinema. After a fire had destroyed the stage and principal hall, the venue wsa reopned end of 1996.

Finally I had a coffee in the "Café Majestic".
Following my guide-book, this is one of the most beautiful café - worldwide. Somebody had told me, that British author J. K. Rowling, who worked as an English teacher in Porto in the early 1990s, wrote down the first part of first of all Harry Potter novels - in the Café Majestic.

The Ponte Dom Luís I is the second oldest bridge in Porto. Older is only the Ponte Maria Pia (a technical cousin of the "Viaduc de Garabit"), constructed by Gustave Eiffel and Théophile Seyrig in 1875/1877. The team split and 1881/1886 Mr. Seyrig built the Ponte Dom Luís I, seen here. With a span of 172m. it was the the longest bridge of this type worldwide. On the lower deck are cars, the upper deck is for pedestrians and the Metro Line D. Seen in the backdrop are the cathedral´s towers.

Since 2011 the "Teleférico de Gaia", a cable car, takes the tourists down to the river Douro on the southern side of the river. To give them all the opportunity to take photos, the cable car is very smooth and slow. Seen here is the Ponte Dom Luís I.
