A fossil bat from the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. About 50 million years old it is called Icaronycterus index which I guess comes from the myth of Icarus, the boy who made a set of wings but flew too close to the sun.

This is a hadrosaur or duck-billed dinosaur, Edmontosaurus annectens , originally found in Alberta and now in the lobby of the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. It was a herbivore, and lived about 70 million years ago. The photo is a composite of several smaller photographs taken from close up. This was done first because the fossil is behind a fence-like enclosure to keep hands off, very understandable but it didn’t look very good in the photos. Getting close allowed the fence to be lost. Second, getting close should, in theory, pick up more detail. The joins are a bit “off” in several places but it was the closest to true that I could get.

Sunlight shining through bottles in the “Bottle House”, Egmont, Prince Edward Island, Canada. This is a classic tourist trap, a group of buildings made from bottles, but even though you know it is tacky you just have to check it out; and the effect is pretty interesting, a lot like stained glass windows.
