H F F......................"Yomper"

H F F......................"Yomper"
HFF everyone. I hope you're all staying safe and well and that you're looking forward to the weekend.

This statue, called "Yomper" was sculpted by Philip Jackson and stands outside what used to be the Royal Marines Museum in Southsea, Hampshire. A "Yomp" is a march with heavy equipment over difficult terrain. Just out of shot there is a plaque which reads "This statue was unveiled by Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven on 8th July 1992 to commemorate all the Royal Marines and those who served with them in the South Atlantic during the Falklands War of 1982".

After disembarking from ships at San Carlos on East Falkland, on 21 May 1982, Royal Marines and members of the Parachute Regiment yomped with their equipment across the islands, covering 56 miles (90 km) in three days carrying 80-pound (36 kg) loads.

There's another image in the PiP.

Best viewed large, on black. Thanks for looking :-)
