The rapid spread of the 'Indian' variant has clearly developed into a Third Wave, with daily new cases at similar levels to those seen in October 2020.

Another large increase in new cases, although at this stage of development, the Third Wave seems to have reduced hospitalisation and mortality rates compared to the previous waves. This is likely to be because of the protection afforded by vaccinations.

The number of cases shows that the Third Wave is still developing, but vaccinations are also progressing.

Judging by the varied changes in hospital patients in the NHS regions, the Third Wave is more or less developed in different areas.

There has been an uptick in the numbers administered for both jabs, as the younger adults receive their first doses and people from earlier cohorts get their second immunisation. Some areas are well ahead of the game but others have more outstanding vaccinations to complete the process.

The role that vaccinations have had in reducing the mortality rate is quite visible in this image, compared to the first two waves.

Comparing the number of hospital admissions in the early stage of the Second Wave (Kent variant - Autumn 2020) with the present situation as the Third Wave ['Indian' variant] begins. There is a much slower increase in admissions in the current phase. which will be explained largely by the vaccination rollout.

The growth in New Cases compared for the start of the second wave (Kent variant in Autumn 2020) and the present situation (start of the 'Indian' variant's Third Wave). A good many similarities can be identified but there are also some significant differences in the situations.

Some regions are showing an increase in patients due to Third Wave infections with the 'Indian' variant. The South West's increase is probably due to the media circus that follows the G7 conferences. In other areas, not so much.

Still there is the concentration on administering First doses, to achieve at least some immunity in the younger adults - although it does take two to three weeks to achieve that protection. In a few weeks, the emphasis will need to return to the second doses.

Very large increase in new cases to-day. [less than a week since the "Euro" football match that is being blamed as a "super-spreader" event due to the social mixing in pubs etc - the actual match was run in a largely compliant manner].

New cases still on an upwards trajectory as the 'Indian' variant Third Wave continues to spread.

The number of New Cases ['Indian' variant] in this Third Wave continues to increase, although hospitalisations and deaths seem less connected than previously.
Vaccine rollout also progressing well, with first doses still climbing in response to opening up appointments and walk-in centres to all adults.

Something of a levelling off on the second doses, as the rollout is concentrating on administering first doses to the younger adults.

The vaccine rollout is now providing first doses to all the younger age groups, as anyone over 18yrs old can book appointments or attend walk-in and various "pop-up" facilities at a wide range of venues.
Progress with administering second doses continues, although people are being reminded not to book too early, somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks being regarded the optimum.
Additionally, I assume that efforts are being made to reverse vaccine refusal and the remaining examples of hesitancy in other groups.

The vaccination rollout is having an affect, in that the death rate seems to be staying very low, as the most vulnerable have built up a significant level of immunity.

The Third Wave of infections [driven by the 'Indian' variant] is beginning to be reflected in increases in hospital admissions [and staying as in-patients]. However, the number receiving mechanical ventilation is rising less slowly at present.
