Despite the fact that winter arrives every year, it seems that safety advice to drivers is always needed, when snow and ice can [and do] cause problems on the roads - especially in areas that don't usually suffer from very bad conditions.
I would add old carpet or cat litter to throw under the wheels if you do get stuck.

One piece of additional advice - if the conditions are likely to be really poor, ask yourself the question "Is my journey necessary ?" and stay at home if the answer is "no, not really" ---
If you must travel, tell someone where you are going, your intended route & expected time of arrival and confirm that you got there !

Don't assume that using main roads will mean that if you have a problem that someone will see you !

If you see someone broken down, then be a good Samaritan and report the situation if you are unwilling to stop yourself.
