clch - hedge density in England
Hedges are an important environmental asset, in two ways. Probably firstly as an aid to supporting biodiversity [ for a hedge that hasn't been "replanted" - a greater number of native species indicates a greater age ] and secondly, regularly maintained hedges are an important means of absorbing carbon dioxide.
Note : in the name of "improving farming" a lot of hedges have been grubbed out to allow larger machines to work in larger fields, the crops tend to be monocultures and require a lot of chemical support.
