Eratosthenes, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eratosthenes a Greek scholar and chief librarian of theLibrary of Alexandria around 230 BCE, is probably best known as the first person to measure the circumstances of the earth using an ingenious method based on the understanding that Earth is a sphere. He employed basic principles of geometry to measure the angle of the shadow of the sun in one place compared to its known distance to another place where the sun was directly overhead. Eratosthenes then multiplied that figure by the 360 degrees of a ball. He was surprisingly accurate – only off by ninety-three miles at the equator. The content of ancient Greek world maps changed dramatically when Eratosthenes wrote his three-volume of ‘Geography (Geographika) around 190 BCE. Those books earned him the title “Father of Geography.” The third volume was all about a map of the world, but it is missing. The book might have disappeared in 48 BCE when the other two volumes perished in the great fire that destroyed the Library of Alexandria. ~ Page 33
