Post-war German women often looked startlingly good, even as a “Trummerfrau’ (feminine) in action. As long as the simplest cosmetic products were available, the need to “look one’s best” remained intact, even under the harshest conditions. Returning men on the other hand generally had a neglected appearance. But appearances were easily dealt with.
