In 1869, Theokletos Vimpo, archbishop of Mantineia and Kynouria, was teaching Greek to an amateur German archaeologist in his Athens mansion. Heinrich Schliemann was forty-seven, divorced, and looking for a new wife who was “enthusiastic about Homer and a rebirth in my beloved Greece.” He asked the cleric for help. The archbishop duly presented three photographs of beautiful greek women for Schiemann to choose from. Among them was Sophia, his own seventeen-year-old niece. Heinrich chose her.

Four years later, Schienmann was excavating a site in north-weatern Turkey that he believed might be Homer’s Troy, when he unearthed “Priam’s Treasure.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priam%27s_Treasure a fabulous hoard of gold jewelry and other artifacts. Soon afterward, photographs of /sophia Schliemann, adorned in Trojan finery and the very reincarnation of Helen of Troy, were flashed across the world to spark a new wave of philhellenism.
