HFF Cuesta Pass California USA 3rd November 1978

HFF Cuesta Pass California USA 3rd November 1978
Back in the distant past I rode the Coast Starlight to Los Angeles behind Amtrak SDP40F diesels 618 & 537. We were held at a red light in Cuesta Pass on the Southern Pacific route north of San Louis Obispo about 190 miles northwest of LA.

We had left Oakland at 07.35 on the first leg of my 3-day, 2350 mile journey back to New Orleans.

HFF (and a wave from me too!) everyone. Have a great weekend.

I knew I recognized that train! That is the train we always take when we go from Portland, Oregon down to Los Angeles. Used to be that the Amtrak train had to stop to wait for freight trains often as they had the right of way. These days that is much less frequent as they've renegotiated Amtrak's rail rights. But I always enjoyed the pause in the trip. It gave me a moment to savor the trip just one bit more and fun to see the workers outside the trains like you show here.

I agree. Stops like this give you chance to look around at the location and enjoy the moment. When I worked in New Orleans not one of my co-workers had been on a train. By the time I left I had convinced many of them to give it a go!

Oh yes, I'm always touting the delights of rail travel to my fellow americans. Good job convincing your co-workers!

Looks like the soil moves there also, judging by the fence above the cutting.

Good looking train.
