El Paso Texas USA 4th November 1978
The stainless steel coaches of Amtrak's well-named Sunset Limited catch the glint of the West Texas sunset during our stop in El Paso station!
I was travelling the 2350 miles from San Francisco and there was still another 24 hours to go before arriving home in New Orleans.

HFF Vista Point Moccasin California USA 29th October 1978
On our journey from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park we turned off Highway 120 to Vista Point overlooking Woods Creek in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
The car was a rental vehicle. I think it's a 1977 Dodge Aspen 4-door sedan. Can anyone confirm that?
HFF & welcome back to Ipernity!

Chicago NorthWestern USA 9th September 1978
The Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad terminus in Chicago was rebuilt in 1984 as the Ogilvie Transportation Center but this view shows the original station in all its gloom.
1953 built C&NW EMD E8 diesel 521 waits departure northwards. These fine engines have since been withdrawn.

Anchorage Alaska USA 10th December 1980 2
I made a stopover in Anchorage when on the return trip to Indonesia after a meeting in New York. I had the whole day - my plane didn't depart until the evening - so rented a car and drove north on Highway 1 & into the mountains.

Houston Space Centre Texas USA 11th February 1979
The massive motors of a Saturn rocket outside the Houston Space Centre, home of NASA Mission Control in 1979.
This is probably no longer on outdoor display. From Google Earth there is clearly now a very large hanger at the Rocket Park.

HFF San Francisco California USA 31st October 1978
The Golden Gate bridge seen from the Marin County end looking south. We were returning to San Francisco from a visit to Muir Woods redwood forest. I was attending a geophysical conference in SF & took an afternoon off, rented a car with a colleague & explored the countryside north of the bay area.
HFF to everyone & have a great weekend.

USA Sierra Nevada California 23rd October 1979
My second trip to California was via a 1250 mile railway journey from Denver to San Francisco which started on the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad to Ogden & after a bus ride from there to Salt Lake City city centre we changed to Amtrak. From Salt Lake to San Francisco we took the Southern Pacific route through the Sierra Nevadas via the snow-covered Donner Pass.
This shot was taken from the open end-of-carriage connecting door in eastern California between Truckee & Colfax. Note the caboose on the tail end of an eastbound freight train heading uphill.
