HWW Midland Railway Glenfield Leicestershire 10th September 2023

HWW Midland Railway Glenfield Leicestershire 10th September 2023
Glenfield railway tunnel wall. Opened in 1832 by Robert Stephenson for the Leicester & Swannington Railway to bring coal & granite into Leicester. At that time it was the longest rail tunnel in the world at 1796 yards! It was taken over by the Midland Railway in 1846 & closed to passengers in 1928 & goods traffic by BR through to Leicester West Bridge in 1966.

This is the 3 1/2 mile milepost inside the tunnel.
HWW to everyone.

A great capture of this historical artefact Peter. By my calculations, this is then the halfway point. Great use of side flash here but come to think of it- the flash would be to one side on a vertical shot. Well done

HWW, enjoy the week. Herb

It would have made a great tram route to Glenfield Ratby and Groby, I used to know an old lady in the village she used to walk form Groby to Glenfield get the the train to West Bridge then walk to the school that is now age concern it didn't do her any harm she made it to 103 I can remember seeing goods trains, the West Bridge wharf covered a huge area

Trams in Leicester. Much talked about but little done! That's an impressive journey she made as a child and in life to live to 103.
