It's 22.27 and we have just arrived back in Crewe with the Scarborough Flyer from Scarborough pulled by British Railways 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell. Crewe station is pretty quiet although there is a small welcoming party at the south end of platform 5. Peter the driver has a few words with one of them.

We departed Crewe for Scarborough at 07.27 so it's been a long day - 18.5 hrs since we got up in fact - but we still have to stable the stock, turn the loco and support coach and get back into Crewe Heritage Centre. We turned on the triangle via Gresty Lane, Crewe Sorting Sidings North & Crewe station.

Uncanny how you posted this pic just a day after I watched a vid of a fireman at work on this loco.

For those interested in just one of a fireman’s keep fit routines, there is a youtube video of 70013 at Denton station on the return leg of the 12th August 2011 Scarborough Flyer. Taken as darkness fell during a 30 min stop for water. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgjFgXtGZVU

It's even more uncanny than you think because I recognised myself on the video! I wasn't cleaning the fire, that was Nick. We are both part of the 5305 LA support group and it is we who prepare and dispose the engine and, as here, hack away at the clinker on the grate during the trip. The WCR fireman has it relatively easy! Nobody is complaining. It's a labour of love for us all.

I had my black woolly hat on though! I was actually on hosepipe duty at the roadside standpipe above the station but do make a very brief appearance on the platform.
