Track circuit failure
| |
|
The points into the loop remain set for the wrong road and the train is waiting at signals whilst signalling staff investigate a track circuit failure on the approach to Consall station.
View through the front cab window of a DMU.
Consall DMU
| |
|
No apologies for featuring another shot of Consall Station. This is a favourite spot and the DMU service today gave an opportunity to create a 1950s atmosphere. The sunshine was short-lived but very welcome.
Philanthropic Mutual
| |
|
The Philanthropic Mutual Life Assurance Collecting Society was established in 1830 according to the sign on the end of the former headquarters building. I have been able to find out very little about the Society although it must have been one of many mutual self help type organisations that were established by working people in industrial areas. I think that 'The Philanthropic' may have ceased business in 1991.
As for the building, it has clearly seen better days but still retains a certain amount of class underneath the lager adverts. The lower sashes upstairs all have acid etched patterned glass - very nice.
Shoreham Power Station
| |
|
Opened in 2000 the 400mw Shoreham gas turbine power station is operated by South Coast Power Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Scottish Power Generation Ltd. It was built on the site of the former Brighton 'B' power station and uses the original seawater cooling inlets and outflows.
Ynysypandy
| |
|
Almost ecclesiastical in style. The Ynysypandy slate slab mill only had a working life of 10 or 11 years as the Gorseddau quarry that supplied it with slate closed in 1867. This massive structure is now a scheduled ancient monument.
The river bridge
| |
|
SY class locomotive heading back to the Dongchang colliery from the exchange sidings at Jixi. Loaded trains tend to work across the bridge in the early morning and empties at night, so we were lucky to catch this light engine crossing on a bitterly cold afternoon.
Ferrymountgarret bridge
| |
|
The lifting bascule section of Ferrymountgarret bridge no longer operates so you need to be careful of headroom at high tide when passing through this section of the tidal River Barrow above New Ross. This bridge was opened with a Scherzer mechanism lifting span on November 7, 1929 and completed at a cost of £22,500. It is understood that it was open to pedestrian traffic from May 1929.
Pear Mill
| |
|
Construction of the Pear Mill in Stockport commenced in 1908 and it was finally completed in 1913. Today this fine cotton spinning mill is a listed structure and divided into industrial units.
Reaching the summit
| |
|
A pair of QJ class locomotives easily handle the load eastbound up the final bank before the summit as they head for Chaganhada and on to Lindong on the Jitong Railway.
South Bank coking
| |
|
Coke ovens in action on Teesside. A view only made possible by the demolition of the three blast furnaces that once stood in the foreground.
Goole departure
| |
|
Empty barges locking down into the river for a trip to Hull. A view from a visit in 1983.
Ineos Silicas
| |
|
Crosfield's works at Warrington form an impressive backdrop to Bank Quay Station and are now operated by Ineos Silicas.
