Passing the Black Lion

S160 USA 5197 departing Consall for Froghall and crossing the Caldon Canal outside the Black Lion pub.
Long Rake Spar
| |
|
A reflection on the Long Rake Spar Company. Although spar is no longer mined here, the company continues to supply stone for decorative and landscape purposes.
Higherfence
| |
|
The sun was rather too high in the sky for taking the best shot here, but I was really taken by the view. Seen whilst mooching around looking at colliery remains above Macclesfield, this is the lower of the two Higherfence reservoirs that once served a dyeing and bleaching works.
Mining relic
| |
|
The landowner advised me that there had once been an adit from which the Sweet seam was worked above Commonside in Macclesfield. This is likely to have been in the mid-nineteenth century and there is little left of the entrance. However, a short distance away this piece of wrought iron bridge rail is a tangible survivor of the mine.

The edge of Macclesfield Forest just peeps over the far hilltop in this view over Wildboarclough from the footpath descending from the Congleton - Buxton road.
Death to midges

A male Common Blue Damselfly ( Enallagma cyathigerum ) makes short work of a midge at Higherfence Reservoir, Macclesfield.
Painted Lady
| |
|
A rather battered Painted Lady butterfly ( Cynthia cardui ) basking on a rock in the hills above Macclesfield. Having flown from Afica or southern Europe along with thousands of others that arrrived in the UK recently, it is not surprising that it has suffered a little damage on the way.
Small Heath
| |
|
The Small Heath butterfly ( Coenonympha pamphilus ) is not all that common, although it can still be numerous given the right habitat of rough dryish grassland. There were several flying today on my walk in the hills above Macclesfield.
Boundary marker
| |
|
Two sides of the same stone. South side on the left and north side to the right. The challenge to the Macclesfield folk is to identify what it is and where it is?

Underside of the wings on a freshly emerged Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary ( Boloria selene ) at Bagmere on a very warm day. This is the last surviving colony of this species in Cheshire. Thanks to Flickrite BITH for inviting me along for the visit.
Broad-bodied Chaser

Male Broad-bodied Chaser ( Libellula depressa ) on a pond at Minshull Vernon. We wouldn't have seen this if BITH hadn't suggested we walked to this pond after viewing a larger one nearby.
