The Bold Venture Lime Works at Chatburn was first opened in 1780 with small kilns. In 1837 the business was bought by Dixon Robinson who built new kilns. The Dixon family continued to run the kilns until the mid 1940s. There were 7 lime kilns and 1 gas retort. Up until 1924 the quarry supplied Chatburn Village with gas. In the 1940s the demand for lime was going down and the kilns were in need of major repairs and were abandoned before 1950. It is difficult to see the remains today as the kilns have been blocked up and are largely hidden by tree growth.
