Passing Victoria Mill

Passing Victoria Mill
Boating down the Rochdale Canal at Miles Platting.

Victoria Mill, alongside the Rochdale Cana, was built between 1869 and 1873 to the design of Bolton architect George Woodhouse. The owner was William Holland who moved his business there from Adelphi Mill in Salford. It comprises two symmetrical six-storey cotton spinning mills separated by an engine house and a chimney that rises from a stair tower. After standing empty for a while this Grade II* listed building has now been renovated mainly for office, apartments and an adult learning centre.

Wonderful on the building, but what about the boat? I assume it's no longer a commercial carrier, but doesn't look to have been converted into anything else.

The boat is a tarboat (narrowboat oil tanker). It was built in 1937 to carry the byproducts of the gasworks around the West Midlands. It also carried gas oil from Stanlow refinery at Ellesmere Port to Oldbury near Birmingham. It has been preserved since the late 1960s and the present owners have had the boat for 44 years. It is on the National Register of Historic Ships and you may have gathered from my soubriquet that I do have a connection.

Well, I can see that it may take a curmudgeon to tolerate running a tarboat! Thanks for the detail, that explains why it looks so solid.

It is pleasing that these handsome buildings can find new uses. They must have been solidly built to house all that heavy metal machinery. It is good to see where your 'handle' comes from.
