Before the split

This is a macro shot of a single little (maybe quarter of an inch across the cap) Bird's-nest Fungus, found at Burnsmead, Fish Creek Park on 21st September. Its cover was still intact, but would soon split from edge to edge right across the middle, allowing raindrops to disperse the tiny "eggs" which contain the spores. Before I saw this, I didn't realize that this fungus was so tall, as most of it was buried beneath the mulch/woodchips.
