Pandemic chalk: Return to Belmont Shore 2
| |
|
Today I got to do chalk at an actual event again, in Belmont Shore neighborhood of Long Beach. They put down paper for the chalk art, so I can do some things that aren't practical on pavement.
This one was inspired by collage and ephemera, and those "Man in the Moon" -type vintage photos.
And it won Honorable Mention at the event. :)

Now The Seeker is offering a small jack-o-lantern to a black cat.
Update: This chalk was washed away about 36 hours after this photo was taken, by a very welcome thunderstorm. Onward!

For October 2022, our front walk features a chalk adaptation of Hannah Frank's "The Seeker" (1931). The carpet of small flowers that merges with the figure's skirt was the easiest part to imagine into colors.

Pandemic chalk: Six Sentinels

This chalk was slightly inspired by Yayoi Kusama, but I couldn't really get the dots pattern right, so the back sentinels are striped, and the checkerboard was just another pleasant repetitive thing to do.

New chalk on our walk in late August 2022 is based on Leonora Carrington's "The Giantess" (1947).

Pandemic chalk: In-between moment

I just noticed this photo in my phone--it caught a moment in between two chalk drawings. The espresso cup was starting to cover over the portrait of a girl. I don't always remember to catch these transitions, but I love looking back at them.

The newer square on our walk in July 2022, based on a Mary Cassatt pastel, "Girl in a Large Hat".

Our front walk has two different chalk drawings in July 2022, one by me (top) and one by daughter (bottom).

Daughter did most of this chalk, to announce that she'll be teaching English in Japan in the new school year.
