I was in Tehachapi in 1975 when I worked for the United Farm Workers and was visiting the union HQ there. I remember lots of trees. Has the pass always been treeless?

Hmmm... it's pretty bare along the highway, like a lot of Southern California. It's probably greener during the wet season (not that we've had a lot of wetness in our winters lately), but I didn't see many trees. The two photos on the Tehachapi Pass wikipedia entry show a similar lack of trees:

I must not have been in the Pass, but lower in elevation where it's greener.
