As I thought: that unearthly glow on the white wall was not the "reality" you claimed it to be.
But you seem to have toned it down a bit on your replacement.

Neither the "original" (the camera-produced .jpg image) nor the tonemapped ("dingy") version is "the reality". No photograph of anything is or can be. One or other may be closer to how the eye saw the reality, but as individuals we may see things differently.
