Freshwater Bay

Freshwater Bay
Freshwater bay on the Isle of Wight is my most favourite view, the cliffs and downs in the distance are called Tennyson downs after the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson who lived just a short distance from the bay.

aNNa schramm, Christa1004, Nouchetdu38, David G Johnson and 6 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thanks Güni, the tide has to be just right to be able to see these rocks and I was very lucky when I took this pic as I nearly fell of the edge, it is a long drop!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend and don't get too hot

If I went through some oldish photos I would be certain about when visited the Isle of Wight. Before my wife passed away went to Isle of Wight with some friends for four of five 'New Year' visits. I think it was from about 2015. Anyway, sure on one occasion did go to or very near to Freshwater Bay. I am now very cross with myself for missing out on this viewpoint :-))) Such a well chosen pov and a superbly framed photo, James.

It's a beautiful place Roger and full of so much history, there is a museum called Dimbola lodge that is dedicated to the Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, the bay is also a stones throw away from where Jimmy Hendrix played his last concert before his death. Thanks for the comment Roger it may be worth you paying another visit sometime if you can afford the outrageous ferry fares!

Thanks very much for the info, James. I will have to start saving for the ferry fare :-)

Thank you David, the coastal strata is indeed very interesting and in places very good for finding fossils. In 1979 a group of friends and I walked non stop around the entire island, 14 of us started but only 3 of us finished, it took 22 hours and 45 mins, I was younger and fitter then so I don't think I'll be doing that again!!

A brilliant thing to do,.and a real accomplishment to look back on too,. I've no idea which route you took but - actually 22.45 hrs. doesn't seem that long when you consider the size of the island.. you all did very well,.// Keep well and Cheers'.. from > Dj.

We started at Ryde and walked anti clockwise around the isle using roads and paths but keeping as close to the coastline as possible, we aimed to walk up the Military road (the longest stretch of road) at night as we didn't want to see miles of road in front of us. Total distance 72 miles. Thanks David and best regards to you.

Now I understand that Tennyson was so talented in writing - with such a view that must have inspired him...

Yes he used to walk over these downs quite often and even though you can't see it on this pic there is a monument to him up there. Thanks for the comment Christa
