St Day old parish church ruins.

St Day old parish church ruins.
HANWE everyone!
Built in inferior stone and on the cheap in the 1820s, this church soon started listing (possibly due to being built on ancient, uncharted tin mine shafts - St Day isn't known locally as 'Sinking City' for nothing!) and by the 1950s was unusable after the roof fell in. No money was available to shore it up and re-roof it so a more modest church was built nearby. Nonetheless it's still a local landmark and the spire is visible for miles around.

Gudrun, Jörg, sea-herdorf, Nora Caracci and 30 other people have particularly liked this photo

It was once known as the richest square mile in the country due to its tin, copper and arsenic mines all concentrated whithin it. It must have been hell on earth. Now you would never know it, it is a rural backwater.

What a shame that this lovely church has been left to crumble. I do understand that it's because it's built on top of mineshafts. It's just so sad to see it like this. There are so many people dying to repair and reconvert old buildings like this - maybe someone will come along and repair it, first ensuring that it doesn't sink down any further. Have a great week to come, Andy.

Thank you, Jenny. This is its best side. The place is an empty shell because there is no roof whatsoever!.

Best excuse yet for a wonky photo Andy..................but seriously, it's still not a bad looking church and, as Rosa said, such a shame it turned out this way. Very well captured sir.........and worth viewing large for the fantastic detail.

I've done this all my life, Steve - I mean Keith!
Sad to relate but I once sent out many 100s of xmas cards to my clients and for some reason called one of my best clients a totally different name. I lost his business and served me right for being careless and not thoroughly checking. But I still do it, as you see!

You and me both mate. I have to double-check every comment I write now! At least we get a laugh out of it (well unless you lose a client of course)!

Well I'm OK now as I haven't had clients for nigh on 15 years - but I do it occasionally with my students and they tend in the main to see the funny side of it and don't take offence!
