Portreath. The Pepper Pot
A huer's lookout post. A huer looked out for the annual pilchard shoals - large sardines - and this was big business. When they were sighted, the town sprang into action. For the past 100 years and more, the pilchard shoals haven't passed this way.

William,
Thank you both!
Andy Rodker club has replied to Pam J clubTHE FEW THAT ARE CAUGHT IN CORNISH WATERS HAVE BEEN RE-BRANDED AS 'CORNISH SARDINES!!'. APPARENTLY TOO MANY PEOPLE ASSOCIATE PILCHARDS WITH UNPLEASANT SCHOOL MEALS. A PITY, I ALWAYS LIKED THEM! AND I WISH THEY HAD KEPT THE TRADITIONAL NAME. WHY MUST EVERY MEAL BE ASSOCIATED WITH MEDITERRANEAN BEACH-SIDE BARBECUES?!
Cheryl,
Many thanks to you both!
