Portreath. The Pepper Pot

Portreath. The Pepper Pot
A huer's lookout post. A huer looked out for the annual pilchard shoals - large sardines - and this was big business. When they were sighted, the town sprang into action. For the past 100 years and more, the pilchard shoals haven't passed this way.

Portreath itself is more interesting than beautiful as a town, but the surrounding countryside and coasts are spectacular!

What a fascinating looking building. Also thank you for explaining what it was called and what it was used for. Shame about it being over 100 years since they've been necessary!

They're still at a loss what to do! The pilchard industry gave a bit of help to the area after the end of the tin mining boom times. But since then and for well over 100 years there's been sweet F. A.!

THAT'S RIGHT, PAM! I THINK SPAIN AND PORTUGAL HAVE BEEN SNAFFLING THE SMALL (YOUNG) SARDINES BEFORE THEY GET TO PILCHARD SIZE AND AGE AND BEFORE THEY GET AS FAR NORTH AS CORNWALL. (THE BLIGHTERS!!)
THE FEW THAT ARE CAUGHT IN CORNISH WATERS HAVE BEEN RE-BRANDED AS 'CORNISH SARDINES!!'. APPARENTLY TOO MANY PEOPLE ASSOCIATE PILCHARDS WITH UNPLEASANT SCHOOL MEALS. A PITY, I ALWAYS LIKED THEM! AND I WISH THEY HAD KEPT THE TRADITIONAL NAME. WHY MUST EVERY MEAL BE ASSOCIATED WITH MEDITERRANEAN BEACH-SIDE BARBECUES?!
