Sierra de La Cabrera, holm oaks

Sierra de La Cabrera, holm oaks
Holm oaks are ubiquitous here. Called encinas in Spanish. In English sometimes called the holly oak as the leaves are similar. (quercus ilex).

They look much smaller altogether Andy. Nice sunny shot.

Thank you, Rosa!
Caught the late afternoon sun and I realised I needed to do an about-turn pretty smartish and head for the bus stop in Valdemanco - at least 1.5 hours walk away!
These oaks don't do badly given the often inhospitable conditions; but they're tough little b.....s and need to be!

They are evergreen if they look like this in January

They do lose most but not all of their leaves in about March / April Jenny but you can see the new foliage is about to take over and so they are very close to being evergreen but not quite 100%.
My girlfirend has a piece of land that she has been toying with the idea of building a place to live on. Every year we go and tidy it up and do some gardening (the council fines people a lot of money if they dont keep their land tidy!).

It is on a slope and very rocky with granite AND lots of holm oak saplings. She loves her saplings with an almost maternal reverence! Woe betide me if I accidentally pull one up!
