Ocotillo

Ocotillo
These are the leaves and stems of the Ocotillo shrub, photographed in Joshua Tree National Park at the Ocotillo Patch, an area where many of these strange plants grow. Most of the year the plants are leafless but after some rain they will put out small leaves.

Amazing how small the leaves are compared with the rest of the plant.
